Research Abroad

General Information

Without international exchange, today's scientific world would not be the same. Therefore, it is no surprise that a stay abroad for research or teaching is highly attractive. The selection of the institution and the supervising person, as well as the setting of goals for the stay, is usually done individually through personal or institutional contacts. However, it is essential to also find funding opportunities for travel expenses, accommodation, visa fees, etc.

KHYS kindly provided information on funding opportunities offered by KIT during a meeting of the Doctoral Convent. The presentation can be found here. In addition, the KHYS website contains plenty of information on funding opportunities for stays abroad, both for doctoral candidates and postdocs.

Beyond the funding options provided by KIT, there are also external institutions that offer support for a research stay abroad. Some institutions support stays in (almost) all countries, such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), while other funds are designated to specific countries or regions, like Fulbright Germany for stays in the USA. An overview of external programs can be found on the KHYS website.

Mobility with ERASMUS

The EU promotes the internationalization of universities through the ERASMUS program. This includes not only the well-known student exchange but also stays abroad for administrative and technical staff, as well as lecturers. Especially for early-career researchers, a stay abroad can be particularly beneficial for building international networks.

ERASMUS partner universities of the faculty are eligible as host institutions for a stay of approximately one week. In exceptional cases, other European universities from countries participating in the ERASMUS program may also be selected.
